Sri Vrikshalayaa
(Poetry in Wood)
The exhibits feature an exclusive catalogue of living room / bedroom furniture, curio cases, bar units, swing planks, office tables, chairs in Rosewood, Teakwood, Ebony, Jack Wood, Satinwood and an array of intricate doors and pillars that fascinate one’s imagination.
The store stands out for its original collection and a rare display of exquisite furniture to decorate your home. The designs are a varied collection of Anglo-Saxon, Chettinad and Burmese styles influenced by cultures of that era. It indeed is a travel to the glorious times of the past to see the intricate designs on Wood. Also on exhibit is a glorious collection of artefacts of the bygone period.
Today Chettinad has become synonymous with heritage………. The massive wooden pillars with ornately carved bodhials that would have graciously adorned the “thinnais” and “mutrams” of the fabled chettinad mansions are an instant hit with the urbane home makers, restaurateurs and hotel owners…..
The Chettinad doors are a treasure trove by themselves…..tall and broad filled with intricate detailing, the “Nila kaal” emphasizes the magnificence and the character of the mansion and due care and importance were taken in commissioning the same…. Today, we feel proud to restore some of these magnificent pieces of art to their original glory.
Carved Wooden panels depicting mythological themes and floral motifs are a feast to one’s eyes. The intricate carving depicting the minutest of the details that provides a real life feel is the main characteristic of the work that was done in the chettinad area. The wooden panels restored by us are adorning the 5 star hotel lobbies and the living room walls here and abroad.
The chettinad carving is not confined to the panels alone but extends to a broad line of furniture like armoires, cots, dressing tables, book shelves et al…. The quality of the rich carving in the furniture makes even an uninterested person to look back!!! Such is the pull and charm of the furniture….. that stands apart due to a judicious mixture of quality of Wood, workmanship and the accessories like ornate tiles and cut glass handles.
The affluent homes in the chettinad region had commissioned a separate line of miniature replicas of the masterpieces in the respective households in order to satisfy the needs of the kids. The kid’s lounge chair, the miniature planters chair are a rage today!!!
The imported lacquer ware from Sweden / Denmark / Czechoslovakia, Belgium cut- glasses / globers / chandeliers, tin toys from England / Japan that were a regular part of the chettinad mansions have a ready list of eager local and international buyers today….
The Chettinad “Maraipaachees”, “Appa Kuzhals” – the spoon holder, coconut graters are the most possessed exhibits of any art collector worth his salt..
